RECCE REPORT

I’ve chosen three main locations to film my production. All three of these locations were carefully considered and chosen as suitable places to film as they all attain their own benefits. For my first scene, I chose the back of the college.
I would like a plain area with very basic scenery to shoot the first scene of my video, which will be of me dancing in my St. Lucian masquerade costume. As the location is outside and I will be shooting in the day, I will not require any special lighting. The only reason I will require lighting is if it is a very gloomy and foggy day. The area chosen is very suitable as it is isolated from the public. I should not have any interruptions whilst filming and no unwanted noises.
For my second location, I will be filming indoors at the West Indian cultural centre. I do not need permission to use this location, as I will be performing at one of their social events. I have already put in an inquest about filming whilst we are performing. The centre has its own lighting and also stage lighting, so I will not need to worry about that.  I will ask for a special seat for my camera man, so that they will have the best possible shot of me. The most beneficial thing of filming indoors is that it’s easier to maintain continuity, so that if you had to re-film things will be in the same order, or you can at least put them back in the same order. One downside of this is that because it is an event, I will not be able to re-film and take many shots. I have to get it right the first time.
My third location will be in class. I want my video to be personal and as realistic as can be, as it is a self portrait. By doing this in class, I will give the audience a sense of my everyday life. Even though I will not be able to control my surroundings in class, I want it to be that way. I purposely chose a hectic area to shoot my voice over scenes, as it gives the video a sense of real time, making it very realistic. As it will be shot on my normal class days, I will not need permission to shoot.

EQUIPMENT

Boom box:
The music box is needed to provide the music for my dancing. Even though I’ve decided that I will use diegetic sound instead of non-diegetic. I still need the music, so that the music will be simultaneous to my actions, and everything will be in perfect timing.

Camera:
I will be using my own camera, which is a Lumix FZ100, 14 mega pixels and Full HD. I want the best quality for my video, and this camera allows me to achieve this. It has both manual and auto settings, so that I can adjust things in the way that I want it, and find most suitable.

Mic:
I do not require a mic, as I will be putting diegetic sound whilst editing. This will be much clearer to the audience.

Lighting:
Because everything is going to be shot in the day time, there will be no need for lighting. The event hall where I will be performing will have its own lighting.

Prop & Costume List

Masquerade costume:
In order to get the best results from the dancing, I need to be wearing my masquerade costume. This will give the audience an idea of what type of dance it is, as it is not a typical costume to wear for any dance. The masquerade costume also adds an extra flare to the dance, visually, which helps to engage the audience to keep watching my film.

Head tie:
The Head tie is very colourful and again adds a lovely visual effect to the dance.

Hoddie:
For the voice overs of the movie Cool Runnings, I watched the scene that I will be mimicking and so that I can look the part as well. In the scene that I mimic, Junior was wearing a casual hoodie and baseball jacket, so I’ve decided I want to look at least similar to the character I was playing.

Fur coat:
Fur coats give the impression of wealth and power, which best describes the character Tony Montana in the movie ‘Scarface’. I will be mimicking one of his famous speeches from the movie, ‘My balls and my word’. I want to depict the character as he is shown in the movie, but a little different, after all it is my Ego picture. By wearing a fur coat my audience may also recognise who I am trying to mimic.

Gold Accessories:
As ‘Scarface’ is a well known gangster movie, I thought it appropriate if I were to use Gold accessories, as gangsters and associated with these things. It’ll add to the look and help me to portray my character much easier.

Description of Programme:
The structure of my film will be typical to its genre. It will only have a equilibrium as it is not a typical film. It will be fitting to the conventions of a self portrait. There will be no need for a new equilibrium as there will be no disruption. Ultimately the structure and form of the film will be a linear narrative.

The style of the film will be a collage of different things. I would like to create a suitable atmosphere to help emphasis the story line. I will be using costumes and filming in suitable areas to create the atmosphere that I want. The movements of the camera will be at minimum, but there will be a lot of straight cuts, to create a montage. Sound effects may be used to help portray the humorous aspect of the film.

Proposal

ND Media Yr1 “Ego Picture” 1 min film
Name Diandra Shortte
Film Brief:
The initial idea for my Ego Picture is to have a video collage of things throughout my everyday life, for example, my culture and my likes and dislikes. I plan to start my video of myself performing a St. Lucian cultural dance in my masquerade costume at an event and at a different location. I will be shooting the dance from different angles to add a rotating effect, and then blending the dances together from the different location, to create a graphic match. This should only last about thirty seconds which would be half of my film.
For my remaining thirty seconds, I plan on filming a portrait of myself, lip reading and quoting my most memorable and favourite quotes from movies such as, Cool Runnings(1993) and Scarface(1983). I chose these films to represent my Ego, and hopefully it’ll show my personality and the things I like. Instead of using non diegetic sound for the film, I will use a diegetic sound (background music) so that you will be able to hear the speeches clearly.
Preproduction materials I will need to produce are:
Script- I need to practice and memorise the script so that when I am ready to film, I will have less takes.
Recce Report- To have an understanding of my location and to make sure it’s suitable before I start filming. This will avoid any major changes and delay to my film.
Schedule- If I have a schedule, I will manage my time well, and will be able to meet my deadline. Having the schedule will also help me to organise my film better, which would mean it will be easier to edit.
Prop List- The prop list is required so that I will not forget any important props needed for my film. This will help avoid delays to filming.
